Chapter 4:  Devil Eyes

By the time the boys walked the short distance from where the school bus dropped them off in front of the compound gates to the bungalow, they were soaking wet and muddy from the torrential downpour.  Diana hustled her boys out of the their wet clothes and toweled their heads dry before they were able to sit down at the table to go over their homework.

“Ike where did you get this scratch?’ Diana asked noticing a scratch on Ike’s temple.
Ike looked over at his brother and Taylor bit down on his lower lip.  Ike pulled a slip of paper out of his pocket and handed it to his mother.  “You kinda, have to go see Mrs Homestead tomorrow.”

Diana read the note and looked at her oldest with concern.  “Fighting?”

“More like pushing, I didn’t hit him” Ike claimed.

“It wasn’t his fault,” Taylor interrupted.  “Tony was calling me names.”

“And, he’s bigger than Tay so I couldn’t let him get away with it,” Ike exclaimed.
“He’s bigger than Ike too!” Taylor added.
“Okay boys, what kind of name calling was involved here, and I don’t want any swear words.” Diana demanded.

“He was saying that Tay has Devil eyes,” Ike exclaimed.
 “Devil eyes?”
“On account of, Tay’s eyes being so pale,” Ike explained.
“Surely there must be other children in your school with blue eyes?” Diana said.
“Not like Tay’s” Ike claimed.  “Tony said that Tay was going to put Devil Hexes on everybody.”
“I don’t have Devil eyes do I Mommy?” Taylor asked.
“No!” Diana denied.  ‘You have beautiful eyes that just happen to be pale blue like your Grandmas.  You two sit down and start working on your homework.  We’ll discuss this more when your Daddy gets home.”
“Am I in trouble?” Ike asked worried.
“I don’t know yet, that will depend on what your teacher says,” Diana said.  “Homework, now.”
Ike and Taylor spread their workbooks and papers across the table and began to fill out their papers.  Ike completed his homework on addition and subtraction and then began practicing the multiplication tables that was his assignment from his mother.  Taylor was writing out his alphabetical letters, drawing them over and over again on the page, and he was bored with it.  When he finished his assignment he went on to the spelling words that his mother was teaching him.
“You know what Mom?” Ike said to his mother.  “You’re a better teacher than Mrs. Homestead.”
“And, you’re a lot funner than Ms. Blake,” Taylor added.  “She makes me do the alphabet and I already know the whole alphabet.”
“Mom, you should be our teacher,” Ike said.  “That way we wouldn’t have go to school everyday and then come home and go to school with you again.”
Diana looked down at her boys and Ikes words were a revelation to her.  Why not?

Neither she nor Walker was satisfied with the school that the boys were attending. It was the only English speaking school in the area, but it took almost an hour bus ride for the boys to get there.  Both boys were more advanced than their classes at school because she did teach them at home.  And it truely wasn’t fair to the boys to have to go to school for six hours a day and then have to continue with the studies that she was giving them.

“Ike, I want you to watch your brothers and sister for a few minutes.” Diana exclaimed.  “I need to make a phone call.”

Ike shrugged and watched his mother put on her boots and raincape.
The closest phone was in the market.  Diana was soaked to the skin in the few minutes that it took her to walk the short distance.  She picked up the phone which was direct link to the Oil Company and called her husbands secretary.  If anyone could find the information she needed it was Sheri.

With the children in bed, Diana and Walker sat side-by-side on the couch enjoying the absolute quiet of the evening, and spoke softly to one another about the days events.
“Sheri said you asked her to research Home Schooling Programs today,” Walker said.
“Did she also tell you that you have to get off work early tomorrow, so we can go talk to Ike’s teacher.” Diana asked.

“No, she didn’t tell me that,” Walker replied.  “What happened?”

Diana explained the events from the descriptions from Ike and Taylor.  “Can you image a child being persecuted just because he has blue eyes.  I want our boys out of there.  We’re not happy with the education they’re receiving.”

“That’s a big task, though,” Walker exclaimed.  “Are we up to home schooling?”
“We both have college degrees.  We can’t do any worst than what they’re getting now.  Neither Ike nor Tay are being challenged by their school work.  The only assignments that they do that push them are the one that we give them.  It won’t hurt to look into it.” Diana suggested.

“I was always pretty good at science and math,” Walker said and Diana smiled because that was his way of agreeing.
You’re good at teaching music also,” Diana said.  “Do you realize that Tay has perfect pitch?”
 “Perfect?” Walker questioned.
Diana nodded.  “Ike is good and he’s a natural, but Tay has the ability to match the scales note for note.  If we home school them they will have more time to focus on music, piano, guitar, sports whatever they’re interested in.”
“I’m already convinced, Di,” Walker said softly.  “But, just remember, you will be the one that will be with them twenty-four hours a day, and those boys are a handful.”
“As far as I’m concerned, we can pull them out of school tomorrow,” Diana exclaimed.
“Why don’t we wait at least until we get the information,” Walker said to slow his wife down.  When Diana got an idea moving she was a hard one to stop.
